Canterbury Biltong has been air-drying premium grass-fed New Zealand beef since 2003. Made the traditional South African way in Christchurch, every batch is cured with simple spices and slowly air-dried rather than cooked, giving biltong its deep savoury flavour and tender chew. High in protein, low in sugar and gluten free with no MSG, it is one of the most satisfying savoury snacks you can throw in a bag.

Whether you are after a post-workout protein hit, a lunchbox filler or something to keep you going on the trail, Canterbury Biltong is... built for exactly that. The brand's motto, “Explore Your Limits”, says it all.

What is biltong, and how is it different from jerky?

Biltong is whole cuts of beef marinated in vinegar and spices, then air-dried slowly at low temperature. Jerky, by contrast, is usually sliced thin and cooked or smoked at heat. The air-drying process is what gives biltong its softer texture and richer, more rounded beef flavour, without the chewiness people associate with jerky.

Because nothing is cooked out, biltong keeps its protein density, which is why it has become a favourite among people shopping our sport and fitness range.

Where is Canterbury Biltong made?

Canterbury Biltong is made in Christchurch, New Zealand, using prime New Zealand beef. New Zealand's pasture-raised farming means the beef is grass fed year round, which the brand credits for the flavour of the finished product.

Is Canterbury Biltong gluten free?

Yes. The full Canterbury Biltong range is gluten free, and you will find it alongside the rest of our gluten free products. There is no MSG and no artificial colours or flavours in the range.

What flavours are available?

The classic biltong range comes in three flavours: Original with Coriander & Pepper, Smokey Barbeque, and Garlic & Cracked Pepper, each in a 100g resealable pack.

There are also Biersticks, sold as a 4-pack of cured beef sticks in Original and Italian, which are an easy option for lunchboxes and for keeping in the car or your bag with the rest of your on the go snacks.

How should biltong be stored?

Keep the pack sealed in a cool, dry place and reseal it after opening. Because it is air-dried rather than wet-cured, biltong is shelf stable and does not need refrigeration until the pack is opened, which is part of what makes it such a practical ready to eat option.

Who is biltong good for?

Anyone after a high-protein, low-sugar snack. It suits low-carb and keto eating patterns, it travels well, and it is popular with hikers, cyclists and gym-goers. It also holds up far better than most snacks in a hot car or a backpack.
