Oatmeal originated in Scotland centuries ago and was different from our modern rolled oats. A coarse meal was produced by slowly grinding the kernel between two large mill stones.

I’m from Scottish heritage and love to cook some traditional foods. Oatmeal is impossible to find. This is the only brand I can find in Australia. Porridge oats is not an acceptable swap. Quality is superb.
I make skirly for every Christmas dinner and at other times as well. Skirly is onions and oatmeal fried slowly in a fat of your choice. Traditionally lard but I now use olive oil. Seasoned well with salt and fine pepper. Great with the Christmas turkey and all the trimmings. Also great with savoury mince and mash potatoes.

Bob`s Red Mill Scottish Oatmeal
Despite growing up in Scotland I don't like porridge oats. Oatmeal, however, was our winter warmer breakfast so I was delighted to find this packet at Australian Organic Products. It is just as filling and warming as I remember eating as a child!
